Car carrier loaded with vehicles on a rain-slicked interstate at dusk

Booked in one call. Tracked to your door.

Tell us the origin, the destination, and the vehicle. We match your car to a vetted, insured carrier on your exact lane, lock an upfront price, and give you live GPS from the moment it's loaded until it rolls off in your driveway. No back-and-forth, no surprise fees, no lot-jockey games.

Every carrier is checked for active FMCSA authority and $1M cargo insurance before a single strap goes on. Expired means no dispatch, no exceptions.

Popular cross country car shipping routes

These are the corridors we quote most often, priced off the same lane table our dispatchers work from. Every route below is a live page with its own rate, transit window, and carrier availability, and every number is what a standard sedan on an open carrier costs today rather than a rounded marketing figure.

We price 20,038 lanes in total, so if your route is not listed it almost certainly still exists. These are just the ones with the deepest carrier coverage, which in practice means the shortest wait between booking and a truck being assigned.

Rates move with carrier supply rather than with a rate card, so the number you see on a route page today reflects what carriers are actually accepting this week. Browse every lane we price or quote your exact route.

What actually changes the cost of shipping a car

Most people are quoted a number with no explanation of how it was reached, which is exactly why the number so often changes later. There are six real inputs. Understanding them is the difference between recognising a fair quote and finding out at pickup that yours was not one.

  • Distance

The floor under every quote, but not a straight multiplication. Cost per mile falls as distance rises, so a 2,500 mile haul is rarely five times a 500 mile one. Short moves under about 300 miles often price higher per mile than a cross country run, because the driver still has to detour, load, and secure the vehicle regardless of how far it then travels.

  • Vehicle size and weight

A carrier is limited by both deck space and total weight, so a dually pickup takes the space of roughly two sedans and is priced accordingly. Height matters as much as length: a lifted truck or a tall van may not fit the lower deck at all, which restricts which trailers can take it and pushes the rate up.

  • Running or not running

An inoperable vehicle needs a carrier with a winch and takes considerably longer to load, which adds roughly one hundred to two hundred dollars. The vehicle still has to roll, brake, and steer. If it will not do all three it needs specialist equipment and is quoted separately.

  • Open or enclosed

Enclosed runs about sixty percent more than open on the same lane. You are paying for a sealed trailer, soft tie downs, usually a lift gate, and a driver carrying higher insurance limits. For a daily driver it is money spent on nothing. For a classic, an exotic, or a fresh restoration it is the cheapest insurance available.

  • Season and timing

The single most underestimated factor. Snowbird corridors into Florida and Arizona tighten every autumn and loosen every spring, moving rates by hundreds of dollars in both directions. Summer is peak relocation season nationally. Booking seven to ten days out rather than two consistently beats any discount code, because it lets us wait for the right truck.

  • Route density

The factor nobody advertises and the one that explains most surprises. A car joining a corridor that trucks already run daily is cheap to add. A car that needs a driver to deviate two hundred miles is expensive even if the total trip is shorter, because somebody pays for the empty miles either way. It is why two towns an hour apart can quote very differently.

So how much does it cost to ship a car?

For a standard sedan on an open carrier, most moves land between about $550 and $1,900. Short regional hops sit at the bottom of that, coast to coast runs at the top. Enclosed transport on the same routes runs roughly sixty percent higher. An SUV or pickup adds fifteen to thirty percent over a sedan, and motorcycles price on their own scale because they take a fraction of the deck.

Anyone quoting meaningfully below that range is quoting a price no carrier will accept, which is a well established tactic rather than an accident. The booking gets taken, no driver picks it up, and days later the price is revised upward when you have a moving date and no alternative. Our quote is what the carrier is paid, which is why it does not move, and the full cost breakdown is here.

What sets Whipshipper apart from other car transport companies

Auto transport has a reputation problem, and it is largely earned. The common complaints are always the same three: the price changed, nobody answered, and no one could say where the car was. Everything below exists because of one of those.

  • The quote is the price

No renegotiation after booking. What we quote is what the carrier is paid, so there is nothing to revise later.

  • No payment until a carrier is assigned

You are not out of pocket while we look. The deposit applies when a real truck accepts your job.

  • Every carrier verified before dispatch

Active FMCSA authority and current cargo insurance checked on every single job, not once at signup.

  • Live GPS from load to delivery

A tracking link with the truck's position, plus the driver's name and number. No calling for status.

  • Open and enclosed on one quote

Compare both on your actual lane instead of guessing whether the premium is worth it.

  • Door to door as standard

Pickup and delivery at your addresses, not a terminal an hour away that you have to drive to twice.

  • Condition photos at both ends

Independent documentation at pickup and delivery, which is what settles a damage claim if one ever arises.

  • Real dispatchers on the phone

Call and you reach somebody who can see your load and change it, not a script.

  • Twenty thousand priced lanes

Rates come off live carrier capacity on your specific corridor rather than a national per mile average.

  • Specialist equipment on request

Winch trucks for non runners, lowboys for oversized, lift gates for low clearance. Arranged at booking.

  • Volume terms for dealers and fleets

Contracted rates, mixed loads, one invoice, and net terms for established accounts.

  • Answering around the clock

Vehicles move at night and on weekends, so somebody is reachable when yours does.

Every auto transport service we run

Auto transport is not one product. A dealer moving forty units off an auction lane, a collector shipping a numbers matching car across the country, and a family sending one sedan ahead of a move are three different jobs that happen to use the same highways. They need different trailers, different insurance limits, different loading equipment, and different scheduling. Quoting all three the same way is how customers end up with a truck that cannot legally carry their vehicle. Pick the line below that matches what you are actually moving, and the quote comes back against the right equipment the first time.

What to know before you ship a vehicle with anyone

This list is not a sales pitch and most of it applies whether or not you ship with us. Nearly every bad auto transport experience traces back to one of these nine things going unchecked.

  1. 01

Check the authority, not the reviews

Any company moving vehicles needs active FMCSA operating authority. Ask for the MC number and look it up. It takes two minutes and rules out a whole category of problem.

  2. 02

Know whether you are talking to a broker or a carrier

Both are legitimate and they are not the same thing. It determines who is liable for your vehicle and who you call when something goes wrong. A company that dodges this question is answering it.

  3. 03

Get the quote in writing with what it includes

Door to door or terminal, open or enclosed, insurance limit, and the pickup window. A verbal number with none of that attached is not a quote.

  4. 04

Be suspicious of the lowest number

A quote well under the market is usually a booking tactic rather than a price. The load sits, no carrier takes it, and the number goes up when you are out of time.

  5. 05

Ask when payment is actually due

Paying in full up front removes your only leverage. A deposit on carrier assignment with the balance on delivery is the arrangement that keeps everyone honest.

  6. 06

    Confirm the cargo insurance limit

Cargo cover varies widely between carriers. Ask for the number and the certificate, and check it comfortably exceeds what your vehicle is worth.

  7. 07

    Photograph everything before pickup

Wash it first so damage is visible, then shoot every panel, the roof, and the wheels in daylight. Timestamped photos you control are what settle a dispute.

  8. 08

    Empty the vehicle

Cargo insurance covers the car, not what is in it. Remove toll transponders too, or you will be billed for a route you did not drive.

  9. 09

Read the bill of lading before signing

At both ends. It is the legal record of the vehicle's condition, and signing it at delivery without walking the car first gives away your claim.

Worth reading next: how to spot transport fraud, brokers versus carriers, and the full pre shipping checklist.

Read before you book

Most complaints in this industry trace back to something the customer was never told: that the first quote was a placeholder, that the broker on the phone is not the company driving the truck, or that personal items in the trunk are not covered by cargo insurance. None of that is complicated once somebody explains it. These are the explainers we send customers before they book, written to be useful whether or not you ship with us.

Car shipping near you, nationwide coverage

We move vehicles in all fifty states and price 20,038 lanes between them. Coverage is not the same thing as depth, though, and the pages below are where the difference shows: each state and metro carries its own lane table, transit windows, and the local conditions that actually change a rate.

Start with where the vehicle is standing today rather than where it is going. Origin is what determines how quickly a carrier can reach it, and it is the larger half of the price.

FAQ

The questions we hear most.

How accurate is the 30-second quote?

The instant quote is a real ballpark based on live carrier capacity, lane density, and 30-day average rates on your specific route. We confirm the exact rate with a vetted carrier name within 60 seconds, and the final number lands within ±10% of the instant estimate the vast majority of the time.

Is the carrier insured?

Every carrier in the Whipshipper network carries a minimum $1M cargo insurance policy and full FMCSA authority (MC + DOT). We pull insurance and authority status before every dispatch, expired = no dispatch, no exceptions.

When do I pay?

Most shipments: a small reservation deposit at booking, balance to the carrier on delivery (cash, certified check, or Zelle). Quick-pay options available for repeat shippers and dealers.

How long does it take?

Pickup typically happens 1-3 days after booking. Transit is roughly 1 day per 500 miles for standard hauls, faster for expedited. The instant quote shows a real transit window for your specific lane.

Open vs. enclosed, which do I need?

Open transport (the standard 9-car carrier) is the right call for daily drivers, fleet vehicles, and most consumer shipments, same carriers that deliver new cars to dealers. Enclosed is for luxury, exotic, classic, and high-value vehicles where weather and road exposure aren't acceptable. Enclosed runs ~50-65% more.

Do you ship motorcycles, boats, RVs, heavy equipment?

Yes, and we have specialty carriers for each. Motorcycles ride on enclosed carriers or palletted on opens. Boats up to 14' beam ship on standard trailers, wider needs oversize permits (we handle those). RVs and motorhomes have driveaway service with bonded CDL drivers. Heavy equipment dispatches on lowboys and step-decks.

How far in advance should I book?

Seven to ten days is the sweet spot. That is long enough for us to wait for a carrier already running your corridor rather than taking whatever is available, which is where the savings are. Two or three days is workable on dense lanes and expensive on thin ones. More than about three weeks out is not better, because carriers do not commit to loads that far ahead.

Are you a broker or a carrier?

We arrange transport with vetted carriers, which makes us a broker, and we would rather say so plainly than dress it up. Almost every national company advertising nationwide coverage is doing the same thing, because no single carrier owns trucks on every lane in the country. What matters is who vets the carrier, who verifies the insurance, and who answers when something goes wrong. We do all three.

What is a bill of lading?

The legal record of your vehicle's condition, signed at pickup and again at delivery. The driver walks the car, notes existing damage, and you both sign. At delivery you walk it again before signing. If you sign without inspecting, you have accepted the vehicle as delivered, which is why the two minutes it takes matters more than anything else on the day.

Can I put personal items in the car?

Cargo insurance covers the vehicle, not its contents, so anything you leave is uninsured. Carriers are also weight regulated and a loaded trunk counts against that. A small amount in the trunk is common practice and generally tolerated, but treat it as at your own risk and never leave anything you would mind losing.

What happens if my car is damaged in transit?

It is rare, and there is a defined process. Note it on the bill of lading at delivery before you sign, photograph it, and call us. The claim goes against the carrier's cargo insurance, which we verified before dispatch. This is exactly why the pickup photos matter: they establish what the vehicle looked like before it moved.

Do you ship motorcycles, boats, RVs, and heavy equipment?

Yes, each on its own equipment. Motorcycles ride enclosed or palletted on opens with soft ties. Boats up to a fourteen foot beam go on standard trailers and anything wider needs oversize permits, which we handle. RVs and motorhomes can be hauled or driven by a bonded CDL driver depending on length and condition. Heavy equipment dispatches on lowboys and step decks.
