What door to door really means

Door to door means the driver picks your car up at your address and drops it off at the destination address. No terminals. No driving an hour out of your way. No paying for storage while you wait for the truck to get its act together.

The fine print: a 10-car carrier is 75 feet long and 13 feet tall. If your street has low branches, tight corners, a one-way feeder, a gated community with a 12-foot arch, or a steep driveway, the driver may need to meet you at a nearby parking lot. That is still door to door in the industry sense. We are talking a 5 minute drive max, never a 50 mile haul to a terminal.

Whipshipper books door to door by default on every shipment, open or enclosed. You only land at a terminal if you specifically asked for the cheaper terminal to terminal option, which we don't push because most people hate it.

Door to door vs terminal to terminal

Door to door

  • Driver comes to your address
  • No driving to a terminal yourself
  • No storage fees stacking up
  • Real pickup window, usually 1 to 3 days
  • Your default with Whipshipper
  • Slightly higher rate, way less hassle

Terminal to terminal

  • Drop and pick up at fixed lots
  • You drive to the terminal yourself
  • Storage fees if you are late picking up
  • Cheaper rate, sometimes by $100 to $200
  • Limited terminal locations
  • Worst when you live far from a hub

Why door to door wins

1

Time back

Skip the 60 minute round trip to a terminal. The driver comes to you.

2

No storage fees

Terminals charge daily storage if you don't pick up fast enough. Door to door drops it in your driveway.

3

Inspection on your turf

Walk the car at pickup and delivery in your own driveway. Better lighting, no pressure, all your tools nearby.

4

Live GPS the whole way

From the second the truck rolls until it pulls up at your destination, you see exactly where the car is.

5

Driver calls before arrival

Usually 4 to 24 hours notice. You are not stuck home all day staring at your phone.

6

Default on every quote

Every Whipshipper quote is door to door unless you specifically choose terminal. No upcharge hidden in step 7.

How door to door pickup works

1

Tell us your address

Pickup zip, drop zip, and the actual street address goes on the dispatch sheet. We verify access for big rigs.

2

We assess access

Tight street, low branches, gated community? We flag it and the driver knows the right meet spot in advance.

3

Driver calls ahead

4 to 24 hours before pickup. Confirms time, confirms meeting spot, asks any last questions about the car.

4

Pickup and inspection

Driver walks the car with you, you both sign the condition report, and the truck rolls.

Door to door pickup tips

Know your street

Cul-de-sacs, low branches, and tight HOA gates can block a 75-foot truck. Tell us upfront so we plan around it.

Pick a nearby meet spot if needed

Big parking lot at a Walmart, Home Depot, or empty school lot works perfectly when the truck cannot fit in your driveway.

Be reachable

The driver calls 4 to 24 hours out. If you miss the call, the pickup window slides. Stay reachable on the day.

Daylight is your friend

Inspection in daylight is way easier. Try to schedule pickup and delivery before sunset when possible.

Have payment ready

Balance is due at delivery. Cash or cashier's check is universal. Confirm payment method on the dispatch sheet.

Take 8 to 10 photos

Every panel, all four corners, the roof, the wheels. Date stamped photos protect you if there is any dispute.
