Shipping a car that does not run
Inoperable vehicle transport means the car cannot be driven onto the trailer under its own power. Maybe the battery is dead, the transmission is shot, you bought a project car at auction, or it has been sitting for years and won't start. Whatever the reason, you need a carrier with a winch.
Not every carrier carries winches. Standard 7 to 10 car open trailers usually do, but the driver has to specifically agree to a non-running load. Some won't, because winching adds 30 to 45 minutes per car and risks damage if the car has frozen brakes or seized wheels.
Whipshipper specifically matches inoperable loads to winch-equipped carriers who know what they are doing. Rate runs $150 to $300 above a comparable running-car load, because the carrier has to commit the extra time and equipment.
When you need inoperable transport
Dead battery, dead alternator
Cheapest version. Some carriers will jump it on site, others want it winched.
Blown engine or transmission
Car cannot move under its own power. Winch is mandatory.
Sitting for years
Flat tires, dry brakes, seized wheels. Carrier needs to know upfront.
Auction project cars
Copart, IAA, Manheim non-runners. Standard situation for us.
Wrecked or salvage title
Drivable wreckage still needs care. Sometimes loadable, sometimes not.
Restoration projects
Frame off restoration, half-built drag car, barn find. We have hauled them all.
What we need to know upfront
Tell us all of these so the carrier shows up with the right gear and a realistic timeline.
- 1Does it start? (yes / no)
- 2Does it shift into neutral? (yes / no)
- 3Does it steer? (yes / no)
- 4Do the brakes work? (yes / no / unknown)
- 5Are all 4 tires inflated and not flat?
- 6Any fluid leaks?
- 7Any body parts missing? (bumpers, doors, hood)
- 8Wrecked frame, bent suspension, or other major damage?
- 9Photos of all 4 sides if possible

Inoperable transport process
Honest condition report
Tell us exactly what does and does not work. Surprises at pickup mean drivers refuse or jack up the rate.
We match a winch carrier
Not every carrier handles non-runners. We specifically dispatch ones that do.
Lock with $99 deposit
Inoperable premium baked into the quote, no surprise add-ons.
Winch and load
Carrier winches the car onto the trailer slow and careful. Inspection still happens.
Inoperable shipping pro tips
Be brutally honest
If the car steers but does not roll, say so. If the brakes are seized, say so. Drivers refuse loads that lied to them.
Photos help everyone
Tires, body, suspension. The more the carrier knows, the better the load.
Pickup may take a touch longer
Winch-equipped carriers are less common, so pickup window can stretch to 5 days vs the usual 1 to 3.
Loose parts ride elsewhere
Loose bumpers, doors, hoods. Strap them down or ship separately, do not just toss them in the trunk.
Have payment ready at delivery
Inoperable premium is part of the rate, not a hidden add-on. Same balance on delivery.
Salvage titles ship normally
Salvage or rebuilt title status does not affect shipping rate. Just tell us the car's actual condition.
