How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car?

Real ranges by distance, what actually moves the number, and the three things that make one quote hundreds of dollars higher than another.

Most people want one number. Auto transport does not have one, and any company that gives you a flat rate before knowing your lane is quoting a guess they intend to revise later. What it does have is a fairly predictable range, and once you understand the four inputs behind it you can tell a real quote from a bait number in about ten seconds.

The honest ranges

For a running sedan on an open carrier, door to door, these are the bands most shipments land in:

• Under 500 miles: roughly 500 to 800 dollars. Short hauls cost more per mile than long ones, because the driver still burns a full pickup and delivery on them.
• 500 to 1,500 miles: roughly 700 to 1,100 dollars. This is the sweet spot of the network, and where competition is fiercest.
• 1,500 to 2,500 miles: roughly 900 to 1,400 dollars. Coast to coast lives here.
• Over 2,500 miles, or anything touching Alaska or Hawaii: quoted individually, because it involves rail or sea legs.

What moves the number

Distance is the obvious input and the least interesting one. The three that actually decide whether you are at the bottom or the top of a band are these.

Lane density. A carrier running Los Angeles to Dallas has hundreds of cars to choose from and will take yours cheaply. A carrier asked to detour to a town ninety minutes off the interstate has one car and a lot of empty miles, and prices accordingly. Being near a major metro is worth more to your quote than almost anything else you control.

Vehicle size and condition. Price is really about deck space and weight. A lifted truck occupies the space of two sedans on the same trailer, so it costs close to two sedans. A vehicle that does not start needs a winch and a driver willing to use one, which typically adds 150 to 250 dollars.

Timing. Auto transport is a spot market. Snowbird routes into Florida in January and out of Florida in April swing several hundred dollars. Late summer, when families relocate before the school year, tightens capacity nationwide. Flexibility on your pickup window is the cheapest discount available to you.

Reading a quote that looks too good

The oldest trick in this industry is quoting a number no carrier will accept, taking your deposit, and then explaining a week later that nobody has picked up your shipment and the price needs to rise. The tell is simple: ask what portion of the quote goes to the carrier. A real quote is built from a carrier rate that someone has actually agreed to run.
