Snowbird Season: Why January and April Cost More

Two predictable migrations reshape pricing on half the country's lanes every year. Knowing the pattern is worth a few hundred dollars.

Auto transport is a spot market, and twice a year a large, predictable migration bends it. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles head south in late autumn and early winter, and back north in spring. If your shipment touches those lanes in those months, you are competing with all of them.

The two waves

Southbound peaks from roughly late October through January, into Florida, Arizona and Texas. Northbound peaks from March through May as the same people return. In peak weeks, a Northeast to Florida run can sit several hundred dollars above its summer price, and pickup windows stretch.

The mirror image is the useful part. While southbound is packed in December, northbound trucks are running empty and are cheap. Carriers hate deadheading, and a shipment going against the flow is the easiest money on their board.

How to use the pattern

• Ship against the wave when you can. Northbound in January and southbound in April are the two best-value directions in the country.
• Move two or three weeks off the peak. Early October or February southbound is materially cheaper than the same lane at Thanksgiving.
• Avoid the fortnight around major holidays entirely. Capacity thins as drivers go home and prices firm.
• Book earlier in season. Two to three weeks ahead in January, where one week is fine in June.

The other seasonal squeezes

Late summer is the second crunch, when families relocate before the school year and students move, tightening capacity nationwide rather than on one corridor. Winter storms across the northern interstates cause delay rather than price movement, though a closed pass can hold a truck for days.

None of this is a reason to panic-book. It is a reason to ask, when your dates are flexible, whether moving your window by two weeks is worth a few hundred dollars. Often it is.
